Founded in 1997, The Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble features the verse and passionate voice of Juan L. Sánchez, a charismatic modern-day troubadour who has transcended his Spanish roots to create a unique musical universe where Arabic and Sephardic melodies co-exist with gypsy rumbas, and sensual bossanovas are adorned with lush Latin jazz arrangements.

The music of the Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble is rooted in the Nueva Canción(Spanish/Latin American New Folk), but incorporates rhythmic and melodic nuances that can be traced to contemporary urban Jazz, Brazilian and Middle-Eastern music. This kaleidoscope of musical genres gives life to the impassioned
word of Juan L. Sánchez, whose aim is to create “Music without frontiers for a world without frontiers” driven by a true cosmopolitan spirit.

In addition to Juan L. Sánchez Sánchez’s guitar and violin playing and his distinctly Andalusian voice, the ensemble features dazzling multi-instrumentalist Dayan Kai on piano, mandolin, zampoña, guitars, charango, kena and clarinet, world-class reeds player Paul Contos on flutes and saxophones, percussionist and vocalist John Martin III and Steve Uccello on stand-up bass and guitarrón.

In early 2004, dance artist Angell Estrada joined the ensemble, bringing her exciting blend of ethnic dance styles to the ensemble’s performances: from classical Egyptian dance and new Flamenco to interpretative Modern dance.

The ensemble also appears at times with guest artists such as Middle-Eastern percussion master Armando Mafufo, Latin Jazz piano virtuoso Murray Low, and super explosive conguero Mario Flores.
.

The Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble performs in a number of different configurations according to the nature of the event. Thus, while a trio or quartet may appear at more intimate venues, the septet,- made out of the core quintet plus Middle-Eastern percussionist Armando Mafufo and dance artist Angell Estrada typically performs at larger venues and festivals.
Some of the recent appearances by the ensemble include:
• The Festival at Sandpoint in Idaho
•Grand Performances in Los Angeles, California
•The National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico
•The World Theater at California State University, Monterey Bay
•The Redlands Bowl in Redlands, California
• The California Worldfest in Grass Valley, California
The ensemble has released two albums to date on their independent label Música Cosmopolita Cosmopolita: Cosmopolita - Cosmopolitan (1997) and Hijos de la
Tierra - Children of the Earth (2004)
