Founded in 1997, The Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble features the verse and passionate voice of Juan L. Sánchez, a charismatic modern-day troubadour who has transcended his Spanish roots to create a unique musical universe where Arabic and Sephardic melodies co-exist with gypsy rumbas, and sensual bossanovas are adorned with lush Latin jazz arrangements. The
music of the Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble is rooted
in the Nueva Canción(Spanish/Latin American New Folk), but incorporates
rhythmic and melodic nuances that can be traced to contemporary urban
Jazz, Brazilian and Middle-Eastern music. This kaleidoscope of musical
genres gives life to the impassioned In addition to Juan L. Sánchez Sánchez’s guitar and violin playing and his distinctly Andalusian voice, the ensemble features dazzling multi-instrumentalist Dayan Kai on piano, mandolin, zampoña, guitars, charango, kena and clarinet, world-class reeds player Paul Contos on flutes and saxophones, percussionist and vocalist John Martin III and Steve Uccello on stand-up bass and guitarrón.

In
early 2004, dance artist Angell
Estrada joined the ensemble, bringing her exciting blend
of ethnic dance styles to the ensemble’s performances: from classical
Egyptian dance and new Flamenco to interpretative Modern dance.
The ensemble also
appears at times with guest artists such as Middle-Eastern percussion
master Armando
Mafufo, Latin Jazz piano virtuoso Murray
Low, and super explosive conguero Mario
Flores. |

The Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble performs in a
number of different configurations according to the nature of the event.
Thus, while a trio or quartet may appear at more intimate venues, the
septet,- made out of the core quintet plus Middle-Eastern percussionist
Armando Mafufo and dance artist Angell Estrada typically performs at
larger venues and festivals.
